Some of the Game Fish We Target and the Best Months to Find them

With Just Fishing Charters, we can target any of these species during their season. We can even do combination trips, e.g., half a day of fluke fishing and half of striper fishing.

Summer Flounder (aka Fluke)

Fluke are one of the best tasting and most challenging fish to target. The New York State Fluke season opens on May 4th where Fluke historically have used Just Fishing’s home waters of the Peconic Bay to spawn. In mid-June, the Fluke start migrating East towards Gardiners Island and then ocean waters off Montauk. Just Fishing follows this migration affording anglers a real opportunity at catching the double digit doormat of a lifetime!

Tautog (aka Blackfish)

These crafty rock/structure dwellers are considered one of the most challenging species to target. Most boats target them using traditional high low rigs in heavy current; Just Fishing takes the opposite approach, utilizing trolling motor “Spot Lock” technology to target them near shore, using light tackle and 1 ounce or less jigs tipped with live crabs to catch bulldog blackfish! Blackfish season opens in NY in early October and the fishing is usually consistently good until the end of November.

Striped Bass and Bluefish

Some of the most prized and target Northeast gamefish are abundant in the rips off Orient Point, Fishers Island and Montauk Point. Just Fishing can put you on these tackle busters — just make sure you bring the pain cream as your arms will be sore after fighting these brutes! This season is productive from May to late October.

False Albacore aka Albies

These mini-tuna will make your reels scream! Although not edible, they are perhaps the most fun fish to catch in our waters as they have the strength of fish 5 times their size. The Albie season typically kicks off in mid-September and is consistently good until the end of October/early November.
